Ellen Harvey (1967, Farnborough, UK) is an artist, cartographer, conceptual artist and much more. She uses a variety of media, ranging from classical oil painting to drawing, engraved mirrors, sculptural installation and public works. Her work offers critical commentary on the experience of art, in particular on the social functions of art and its role as a mirror of society. She uses humor and spectacle to seduce viewers into thinking. The Disappointed Tourist is Harvey’s first solo exhibition in Austria. The title refers to Harvey’s ongoing series of paintings of places submitted by the public in response to the question “is there a place that you would like to visit or revisit that no longer exists?” Sites submitted range from places destroyed by war or gentrification, from culturally significant sites to deeply personal losses, from recently destroyed to some of the famous lost sites of antiquity.
From October 24 to November 6, Ellen Harvey will be painting in the exhibition and accepting new submissions for the Disappointed Tourist.
