Robert Devriendt
Robert Devriendt (1955, Bruges, Belgium) is a visual artist and author who lives and works in Bruges. Known for his intricate and evocative paintings, his thematic depth in his artworks offers a profound commentary on perception and storytelling, placing his work at the intersection of painting and cinema. Through this approach, Devriendt invites the viewer to engage with his works as if reconstructing an interrupted narrative, where the spaces between the images are as significant as the painted scenes themselves.

Robert Devriendt’s ongoing project, THE MISSING SCRIPT, delves into fragmented narratives through small series of paintings. The latest chapter, Fête solitaire, takes inspiration from his repeated nature walks along the same route. Instead of focusing on the natural surroundings, Devriendt was drawn to disruptions—a discarded perfume bottle, a crushed can, or a parked car with its lights on. These details brought to mind the fêtes galantes of Watteau. His paintings depict isolated figures amidst clues of celebration, such as a fluorescent light in the grass or a deserted highway, inviting viewers to construct their own stories, blurring the line between reality and fantasy.

Devriendt’s exhibitions span prestigious galleries and museums across Europe and beyond. Solo shows include Baronian, Brussels (Belgium); Xippas, Geneva (Switzerland); Galerie Loevenbruck, Paris (France); Mocak, Krakow (Poland); Groeningemuseum, Bruges (Belgium); Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle (Belgium); and Museum M, Leuven (Belgium). His work has also been part of notable group exhibitions at Z33, Hasselt (Belgium); S.M.A.K., Ghent (Belgium); and MuZEE, Ostend (Belgium), as well as at the National Art Museum of China, Beijing (China) and the KMSKA, Antwerp (Belgium).

Public and private collections have acquired Devriendt’s work, including MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow (Poland); 21C Museum, Louisville (United States); S.M.A.K., Ghent (Belgium); and the National Bank of Belgium, Brussels (Belgium).

Robert Devriendt has also written two novels, Maximes Obsessie (2021) and Het Intieme Interview (2024), both published by Borgerhoff & Lamberigts.
